What the Google Maps top 3 do differently
We audited 1,002 top-10 Google Business Profiles across 20 US metros. Review velocity and photos separate the top 3. Posting on Google, categories and services don't.

Most Google Business Profile advice is a checklist: claim the listing, fill in every field, post every week. We wanted to know which of those things actually separate the top 3 map results from the businesses just below them.
We took the top 10 Google Maps results for five local-service searches in the 20 largest US metros and audited every profile: 1,002 businesses. This is a summary; the full study with every table is on TopiLeads.
Key findings
- The basics are table stakes. 98–100% of top-10 listings are claimed, link a website, list hours and have a description. They won't get you into the top 3, but missing them keeps you out of the top 10.
- Review velocity is the clearest difference. Top-3 businesses got a median of 10 new reviews in 30 days, against 6 for positions 4–10. The #1 result had a median of 13; the #10 result had 4.
- Photos matter, and fresh ones more. A median of 101 photos in the top 3 against 72, and more of them added in the last 90 days.
- The top 3 reply more consistently. 77% reply to at least half of their recent reviews, against 68%.
- Posting on Google doesn't separate them. 47% of the top 3 posted in the last 30 days, against 45% of positions 4–10.
- Neither do categories or services. Both groups list a median of 4 categories and 30 services.
Top 3 against positions 4–10
| Signal | Top 3 | Positions 4–10 |
|---|---|---|
| New reviews in the last 30 days (median) | 10 | 6 |
| Photos (median) | 101 | 72 |
| Reply to half or more of recent reviews | 77% | 68% |
| Posted on Google in the last 30 days | 47% | 45% |
| Categories listed (median) | 4 | 4 |
| Services listed (median) | 30 | 30 |
What to do with this
- If you run a local business: ask every customer for a review, every week, and reply to all of them. Add real photos regularly.
- If you sell local SEO: sell a review engine, not a posting calendar.

Method and limits
- Searches: "plumber", "roofing contractor", "HVAC contractor", "dentist" and "med spa" in each of the 20 largest US metros, 100 searches in total, collected September 26, 2026.
- "Top 3" is positions 1–3 in each search (300 businesses); the comparison group is positions 4–10 (702 businesses).
- Only public profile data was used. No business accounts were accessed.
- One snapshot. Map rankings shift with the searcher's location, and this shows what top businesses have in common, not what caused their ranking.
