AI Overviews are on 80% of searches. The traffic didn't follow
Three studies find AI visibility barely moves traffic, rankings swung on Saturday, and which links Google still counts.
AI Overviews now show on more than 80% of Google searches. In the same week, three studies found AI visibility still sends very little traffic. Rankings swung hard on Saturday while Google keeps feeding trackers bad results. Search Console's AI report is turning up odd winners, and Cyrus Shepard had a big week on which links Google counts.
1. AI Overviews now show on more than 80% of Google searches
TL;DR Three tracking tools now put AI Overviews on more than 80% of searches. On commercial terms they have nearly doubled since spring.
Why it matters It now sits on pricing, review and comparison searches, the ones that used to send buyers straight to your page. And Google is rewriting the citation cards too, so even the link to you gets summarized before anyone clicks.
What people are saying
- Search Engine Roundtable pulled data from Semrush, SE Ranking and seoClarity: AI Overviews show on over 80% of searches, against about 50% in June last year and about 15% the year before.
- Semrush found AI Overviews on 88% of the commercial keywords it tracks, up from 46%, across reviews, pricing and comparison modifiers.
- Aleyda shared SE Ranking's study: AI Overviews on 82.5% of US brand searches, and the overviews lean on the brand's homepage.
- Google is testing AI-generated summaries inside AI Overview citation cards, and Discover is testing summaries where you can't click the sources. Lily Ray's verdict: "Google just doesn't even care anymore."
Do this Search your brand name and your top three commercial terms today. Write down what the AI Overview says about you and which page it cites. That's your starting point for theme 4.
2. Three studies say AI visibility barely moves traffic yet
TL;DR Studies from Marie Haynes, Kevin Indig and SEO Works all found weak returns from AI search so far. Kevin couldn't find a reliable link between AI visibility and branded search.
Why it matters 2027 budgets are being written now, and GEO is on most of them. The data says keep Google first. AI search isn't worthless, but don't move money out of search to pay for it.
What people are saying
- Barry Schwartz rounded up three new studies suggesting AI visibility may not be worth investing in, with a summary video from Rand Fishkin.
- Kevin Indig ran 632 tests on four brands looking for AI visibility showing up in branded or direct traffic a few weeks later. He couldn't establish a reliable relationship.
- Glenn Gabe: AI search was sending less than 1% of traffic to most sites, and that number has barely moved since.
- Marie Haynes: GEO is a distraction next to agentic checkout. Cyrus Shepard: "Google Search is where most GEO happens now." Cody Schneider: it's SEO on three engines.
- On the other side, Noah Kagan lists getting found in ChatGPT as a new kind of demand, and Tibo says ChatGPT traffic is climbing on his apps.
Do this Report AI search as its own line with its own target. Don't let it borrow credit from organic, and don't fund it by cutting organic.
3. Rankings swung on Saturday, and the trackers are still unreliable
TL;DR Tracking tools lit up on Saturday, October 24, with no confirmed update. Google is still feeding scrapers bad results, so some of what you see may not be real.
Why it matters Real ranking moves and tracker noise are mixed together right now. React to a tracker drop without checking Search Console and you may fix something that never broke.
What people are saying
- Barry Schwartz: ranking volatility got "heated" on Saturday, October 24, on top of weeks of chatter and no official core update.
- Glenn Gabe confirmed two sites in the same niche dropped out of the results, even for brand queries, then came back. Lily Ray: "is Google testing something?"
- Glenn also shared Ahrefs' statement on Google poisoning search results, and new research showing Google answering tracker queries based on a single word.
- Search Engine Journal asked the tools how they handle suspect results, and argues rank tracking broke in September.
Do this Before you react to any drop, open Search Console, compare clicks week over week for the affected pages, and only then decide it's real.
4. Search Console's AI report is turning up odd winners
TL;DR The Generative AI report in Search Console shows which of your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Early users are finding that the most-shown page often isn't the one they would have picked.
Why it matters It's the first first-party view of where Google's AI uses your site. Impressions only, but it shows which page Google treats as your source of truth.
What people are saying
- Lily Ray found an enterprise brand whose About page is its most cited page in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with 5x the impressions of the homepage.
- Cody Schneider: the report shows pages by country, device and over time, but only impressions, so join it with your click data. Will Critchlow says SearchPilot is now detecting AI visibility changes in its tests with this data.
- Being cited isn't being named: some brands on ChatGPT's cited pages still got few mentions. And Kevin Indig warns against treating ChatGPT as a proxy for all AI search: Gemini and Claude are growing faster.
- Semrush: how Feature Upvote fixed a wrong AI Overview answer in a few days.
Do this Export the Generative AI report and sort by impressions. Read your top three pages the way a model would. If your About page leads, make sure it states your product, category, pricing model and who it's for in plain sentences.
5. Which links Google still counts
TL;DR Cyrus Shepard spent the week on how Google weighs links: trust spreading from one good link, and the text around the link. Meanwhile, AI-run link submission is going mainstream.
Why it matters Google ran four spam updates this year. Agents make bulk link submission easy, and easy to do at a scale that gets noticed.
What people are saying
- Cyrus on the API leak's "matchedScore" attribute: one trusted link with similar anchor text can make Google trust a batch of suspicious ones.
- Cyrus on anchor context from a Google patent, and a longer piece on creating links Google can't ignore.
- Builders are handing directory submission to agents: Grok Bot across 4,000+ sites in a day, and Claude Code with Claude in Chrome filling forms in your own logged-in browser.
- The counterweight: backlink-guard vets a directory before you submit (dead sites, sold links, link networks), and Antonio Escudero analyzed 14,000 directories to find the ones that send traffic.
Do this Before your next batch of submissions, cut the list to directories that rank for something themselves and don't sell links. Ten good ones beat four hundred.
By the numbers
From SeekWinners' US shopping-search sample: 3,387 category terms across 12 categories. This is our data.
- 62% of shopping terms show an AI Overview, flat on last week and well below the 80% headline in theme 1. Highest: Health and Beauty at 81% and Electronics at 80%. Lowest: Furniture at 36%.
- Reference sites take 20% of 8,628 citations, against 13% for Shopify stores. Wikipedia is the #2 cited host in 10 of 12 categories.
- YouTube is the top cited host in all 12, with 21% of citations. Shopify stores do best in Toys and Games at 22% and worst in Electronics and Vehicles and Parts at 4%.

Writing tools took all three spots. How we rank: whole packs, not single skills, with at least 200 new installs in 7 days. We left out two packs whose skills all showed near-identical install counts and no new stars.
Worth a click
- Pichai: agents will reach sites through pages and APIs. Also inside ChatGPT's ad auction, and robots.txt covers crawling, not use.
- Tools: Cyrus's ideal AI SEO tool tests brand facts, not prompts; an AEO toolkit, GEOInflow for AI crawler logs, cloro for agents.
- Playbooks: start from 50 customer searches, internal links with Claude, YouTube for pages stuck at 15 to 30, a Chrome extension page.
- Ecom: SEOKeval's 10 mistakes and 9 lessons; Chad's guide built around buyers.
- Local: a ChatGPT local playbook (loud, light on data), and why the map pack matters more.
- Link lists (vet them first): 724 free backlinks, Illyism's listicle route to ChatGPT, 20 fast-indexing parasites. And a SaaS getting 90% of revenue from automated SEO.
From CiteCycle
Theme 4 is about which of your pages AI treats as your source, and whether being cited means being named. CiteCycle asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews your buyers' questions every week and records both separately: was your brand mentioned, and which of your pages were cited.
